April is a very special month — it is officially recognized as the Month of the Military Child . Each year, Odyssey Online Learning proudly joins schools and communities across South Carolina and the nation in celebrating the resilience, strength, and sacrifices of students whose parents serve in the military. Why “Purple Up”? You may have heard the phrase “ Purple Up !” during April. The color purple symbolizes all branches of the military by blending their individual service colors into one: Army – Green Air Force – Blue Navy – Blue Marine Corps – Red Coast Guard – Blue Wearing purple is a visible way to show support and appreciation for the children of military families who demonstrate bravery and adaptability in the face of frequent moves, deployments, and other unique challenges. The Importance of Supporting Military Students Military-connected students often experience circumstances that their peers may not fully understand — from adjusting to new schools every few years to coping with the absence of a deployed parent. Despite these challenges, these students show incredible resilience, strength, and leadership. Septima Clark: The Mother of the Movement Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deemed Septima Clark the “Mother of the Movement,” recognizing her relentless efforts in education and activism. A Charleston native, Mrs. Clark saw literacy as a key to empowerment and established citizenship schools to teach African Americans reading, writing, and civic engagement. Her work helped thousands gain the ability to vote and participate fully in democracy. Esau Jenkins: Empowering Communities Through Economic Justice A native of Johns Island, Esau Jenkins, was a visionary leader who understood that economic empowerment was crucial to breaking cycles of poverty and discrimination. He established the C.O. Federal Credit Union to provide low-interest loans, allowing his community to access better housing, transportation, and education opportunities. His work laid the foundation for financial independence and stability among Black families in South Carolina. Modjeska Simkins: A Champion for Civil Rights An educator from Columbia, Modjeska Simkins dedicated her life to fighting discrimination in education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and voting rights. Her leadership in the South Carolina NAACP was instrumental in challenging segregation and advocating for equitable policies. Her tireless activism left an enduring legacy in the fight for justice. Cleveland Sellers: A Leader in Student Activism Dr. Cleveland Sellers, a native of South Carolina and former president of Voorhees College, played a crucial role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Civil Rights Movement. His activism led to his wrongful imprisonment after the Orangeburg Massacre, a tragic event where state police opened fire on peaceful student protesters. Despite this, Dr. Sellers remained committed to education and advocacy, leaving a lasting impact on civil rights history. Millicent Brown: Breaking Barriers in Education Dr. Millicent Brown, a Charleston native, was one of the first Black students to integrate Charleston County schools following a lengthy legal battle. Her courage and perseverance helped dismantle racial barriers in education. Her PhD dissertation later explored the history of civil rights activism in her hometown, ensuring that these stories continue to be told and learned from. Phillis Wheatley As the first published African American poet, Phillis Wheatley overcame the immense challenges of enslavement to share her remarkable talent with the world. Her poetry continues to inspire with its eloquence and resilience. Frederick Douglass A towering figure in the abolitionist movement, Frederick Douglass used the power of his words to advocate for the end of slavery and equal rights for all. His autobiography remains a powerful testament to the fight for freedom and dignity. W.E.B. Du Bois and the Harlem Renaissance W.E.B. Shirley Chisholm As the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and the first to seek the presidential nomination of a major party, Shirley Chisholm shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for women and people of color in politics. Her motto, "Unbought and Unbossed," continues to resonate today.
